How to change BMW M Sport Key Battery

by Mars

We started getting an error on the dashboard of our car saying that the battery in our remote control had to be replaced. This is a step-by-step guide on how to change the BMW M Sport key battery.

The first thing you think when you look at the remote is where the hell is the battery and does this thing even open?

Well, it does open and it is quite easy when you get around to doing it the first time. But it’s not hugely intuitive. So let’s go through it one step at a time.

Step one

Find a little button on the side of your remote.

Step two

When you press that button, you will be able to pull off the back, revealing a skeleton key.

Step three

This is the tricky one – you have to now separate the back cover from the remote control. I used a very small screwdriver to do this. Be gentle. It does feel like you’re forcing it a bit, but with a the right amount of force it does eventually clip out. Be patient.

Step four

Buy a new battery. When you open the remote, you will see that it uses a CR2032 battery. I like to use Duracell batteries for most applications as they do typically last longer than other batteries, and I went onto Amazon and purchased my replacement.

If you opt for Duracell you’ll see that to confuse matters, they [Duracell] use a code reference DL2032 for their battery. This is the same battery as the CR2032, so you can buy it with confidence.

Step five

Pop out the old battery, and fit the new one. Again, use your small screwdriver to get just underneath the battery at the bottom edge, and it pops out very easily. Fitting the new battery is also very simple.

Step six

Clip the back cover back on. This is a bit fiddly. Examine the clips and where they fit in. Once you’ve aligned those, apply a small amount of pressure and everything clips in.

Step seven

Slide the skeleton key back into the remote.

That’s it. You’re good to go. This process took under five minutes to complete, and is quite simple.
